Achieving financial independence is a process that involves more than learning how to invest wisely. Anybody can do the mechanics of earning, saving, and investing. That's the easy part. Years ago, the Shick Center used aversion therapy on people who wanted to quit smoking or lose weight. It's a very effective technique and you can use it to begin changing your thinking about money (or anything else.) Get a wide rubber band and put it on your wrist. Whenever you catch yourself having one of those negative thoughts, snap the rubber band against your wrist. (Make sure you pull the rubber band out far enough so when you snap it, it hurts.) For each negative thought, create the opposite positive, supportive thought. After you've snapped your wrist, tenderly rub it, think the positive thought and install the new thinkingt into your mind to replace the negative one. You can speed the process up by intentionally thinking the negative thoughts and snapping your wrist several time with the same statement. Always install the positive thoughts after snapping your wrist. The intention with this exercise is to re-program your mind and your thinking. Wear the rubber band for 30 days and keep snapping until your thinking changes. I guarantee your mind will stop thinking the negative thoughts.

Another action you can begin now is in learning to manage your money. The biggest difference between people who are financially successful and people who aren't is in the amount of time they spend managing their money. People who are not financially successful spend no time managing their money and most often are avoiding their whole financial situation. Rich people spend 20 to 30 minutes every day managing their money. How much do you spend?

Begin by taking a realistic look at your finances. Write it all down. How much do you earn? How much do you spend? What are you spending your money on? How much do you owe and to whom? What are your monthly payments? Avoiding it won't make it go away and if you don't know the details, you'll never be able to manage it. If you want to be rich, start doing what the rich people do.

Make sure you balance your checkbook every month. Open the mail when it comes in and schedule your bill-paying time. Begin a plan for saving on a consistent basis - start that habit now. The amount you save is not as important as the fact that you do it consistently. You are establishing another new habit with this action.

In the beginning of the process you may not have enough money to manage to spend 20 minutes a day on. So use the time for your financial education. Begin learning about money by reading or taking classes. Your intention is to begin acting like the rich and to establish a new habit for yourself.

Here's one more little bit of wisdom I find to be very powerful: The Universe doesn't know the difference in the denominations of the money we deal with in the physical world. To the Universe, a penny is the same as a thousand dollars - it's all money. And the Universe doesn't give us more of what we don't manage in our life. So if you're not managing your money, why would you expect to get more?

An extension of that: When you walk by a penny on the street, do you pick it up or walk by because it's not worth bending over to pick up a single penny? If you walk by it, the Universe interprets that to mean you don't need more money - the Universe sees a penny as money, not just one cent. From now on, when you find money, no matter the denomination, pick it up and thank the Universe for it's abundance.

There's a simplicity to creating financial independence and living in abundance that's revealed when we get out of our own way. You can begin the process anytime. A friend of mine, Steve Moeller, did research on the science of happiness. He gathered information to write a book about what really makes people happy. He gave me permission to share some excerpts with you from an article he wrote for Investment Advisor magazine. I found his thoughts very interesting, and hope you will too.

The assumption that more money will make us happier is etched into our consciousness. Happiness is something we all want; it's the holy grail of Western civilization. Biologists have recently proven that all higher species from lizards up to humans are biologically programmed to pursue pleasure and positive emotions. It's a basic subconscious drive that all creatures have. Everything we do, we do because we consciously or unconsciously believe that it will make us happy.

That more money will lead directly to more happiness is such a basic assumption that most people never stop to question it. When researchers at the University of Michigan asked research subjects what would improve the quality of their lives, the majority of the respondents said "more money."

The assumption that more money will bring us more happiness is etched into our consciousness, championed by our culture, promoted with billions of dollars of advertising each year, and institutionalized in our public policy. And it is still the primary promise of benefits that many investment advisors focus on. But is it true?

"Happiness" researchers have conducted more than 150 surveys all over the world with more than a 1 million participants. Let's take a look at what they have learned.

Since the end of WWII the purchasing power of American households has tripled. New homes are now twice as big as they were after the war, we have twice as many cars per person, and we eat out more often. The average American now lives much better than most of the kings and queens throughout history.

So are we happier? No!

This spectacular increase in wealth has had almost no positive effective on our society's happiness. In fact, from 1957 to 1996 the proportion of people telling the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center that they are "very happy" declined slightly (from 35% to 30%.) Over the same time period; divorce doubled, the prison population quintupled and major depression rose tenfold, turning it into the fourth most common debilitating disease. America's not alone; Europe and Japan have experienced the same basic trends.

One of the happiness researchers' more noteworthy findings came from a survey of Forbe's 400 wealthiest Americans. These cent millionaires and billionaires were asked to rate their life satisfaction from "extremely dissatisfied" (1) to "extremely satisfied" (7). Surprisingly, the respondents' average rating was 5.7, only slightly above the average rating.

But here's the really interesting part. Masai tribesmen from Kenya in East Africa also participated in the life satisfaction survey. Although they live in huts made out of dirt and cow dung, herd cattle for a living, have no electricity or running water, and don't have any money, they also rated themselves a 5.7 in the life satisfaction scale.

Quite a few studies now show that believing that money is more important than other values-like relationships with loved ones, spirituality, a feeling that your life is contributing to the greater good-is actually detrimental to happiness. Clearly there's more to happiness than wealth, luxury and material comforts.

So, how much is the right amount of money to maximize our happiness? Here's the bottom line from the scientific research on happiness-once we have enough money to pay for life's basics like food, clothing and housing, more money has very little impact on our happiness.

More money does buy more happiness and well-being if you are poor, and increases fairly quickly until you achieve a solid middle class income. But research shows once your household income reaches the middle class range, increased income has a diminishing positive impact on your happiness and well-being.

The point is, above a certain income level, which isn't by any means "wealthy", additional income alone has almost no impact on our happiness. And depending on the price you pay to earn it, more income could even reduce your quality of life.

In fact, a large and growing number of studies support happiness researcher Ed Diener's comment that, "Materialism is toxic for happiness." But most Americans don't seem to believe this.

Why, if we tell researchers that more money doesn't make us happier, do we chase it so hard? We could blame it on advertisers and the media, two giant institutions that have a vested interest in having us consume more and more stuff each year. But there is another, more subtle villain; the subconscious workings of our brain.

Psychologists have developed a term "hedonic treadmill" to describe humans adaptation to more wealth and material goods. So if you get a new car, you will be happier for a while, but then you will adapt, and so think it's normal. In order to maintain the same level of happiness through consumption, you must continually buy new things. This is what the concept of "retail therapy" is all about. Adaptation is great for the economy, but bad for you and your financial security.

As an investment advisor, I often work with people who believe that more money will buy them more happiness. As evidenced by this article, in reality, I should help clients determine what will really make them happy and then determine how much income their ideal life will require. It may be a lot less than they originally thought.

What Money Should You Use First In Retirement?

Most successful retirees will have three sources of money for retirement:

Qualified: IRA, 401(k), 403(b), Thrift Savings Plan, etc. that they contributed to during their working years for use during retirement. Income taxes have not yet been paid.
Social Security: Virtually every private-sector worker is eligible for Social Security during their retirement years. Also, a non-working spouse of a qualifying worker is generally eligible to receive at least one-half of what the working spouse qualifies for at normal retirement age.
Savings and investments: These are your other savings you've set aside for retirement or to pass on to the next generation. This pool of money is sometimes called non-qualified money because income taxes have mostly been paid or lower tax rates apply - for example capital gain taxes or taxes on stock dividends.

Two of these sources have age restrictions. Social Security can be taken as early as age 62 (earlier if disabled or there are other special circumstances) and should be started no later than age 70 because this is age when benefits peak based on the mortality tables. You are generally penalized for using your qualified money before age 59-1/2; however, there are numerous exceptions. You must start withdrawing a minimum amount from your qualified retirement money when you reach age 70-1/2. Of course, you can convert your qualified retirement money to a Roth IRA which allows you more latitude in its use. You can use your non-qualified savings and investments at any age or you can bequeath these moneys to others at your death.

What about taxes? Your Social Security benefits will always receive favorable tax treatment. Of course, the more income you have the greater will be the income taxes on your Social Security benefits. But, under current law Social Security benefits are always tax favored. Your qualified retirement money will be taxed at your normal income tax rate when you begin to withdraw it - and remember you must start taking required distributions at age 70-1/2. You can convert your qualified money to a Roth IRA and pay the taxes all at once and then enjoy tax-free income indefinitely into the future. Converting to a Roth IRA makes sense for some but not other; therefore, you'll want to get professional advice before converting to a Roth IRA. Your non-qualified savings and investments generally have the least amount of taxes due when used because you've already paid income taxes or they receive special treatment such as capital gains or dividend income.

What happen at your death? For Social Security, your spouse will be eligible to get the greater of what he or she qualified for on their own or as your dependent OR whatever the deceased spouse was receiving. This spousal benefits is very important because it will be received as long as the surviving spouse lives - which could be a very long period of time. If the deceased spouse elected to postpone Social Security until age 70, that means the surviving spouse will get a much larger amount than if the decreased spouse started early at age 62. For qualified money such as IRA, 401(k), 403(b), etc. it can generally be passed tax free to the surviving spouse, or others, and they will pay taxes at their normal rate. Generally payout must occur over their remaining lifetime. There are methods whereby you can stretch payout if left to non-spousal heirs and I encourage you to speak with your financial advisor about this if you do not plan to use all your qualified money during your lifetime. Your non-qualified savings and investments are part of your estate and can pass to whomever you elect at your death. I'll not comment on the tax consequences of these money but will encourage you to get professional advice from a financial planner, attorney and CPA if you have a sizable estate that will pass to others at your death. This is very important if you wish to prevent the Government from being your beneficiary.

Now that I've set the stage, which of your money should be used first in retirement? Of course it depends on your individual circumstances but the average retiree that can afford to postpone Social Security until age 70 will generally benefit. Why? Because, the money is always tax-favored so you want a relatively larger portion of your retirement money to come from Social Security. Since Social Security benefits grow about 8% for each year postponed PLUS a cost of living adjustment (making total growth about 11% annually), you can't beat this rate of return with any other safe money investment. Add to this exceptional growth the spousal benefits and the lower tax rates and you have a powerful reason to postpone Social Security for as long as possible. I know, you're worried about dying before you reach the break-even age of about 80 - remember the spousal benefit and look at the mortality tables. You'll find that there is almost a certainty that one or both of the average married retirees will live into their 90's which is well beyond break-even age. So, contrary to conventional wisdom, postpone your Social Security if you can afford to - especially if the wife is a few years younger than the husband and the husband was the principal breadwinner. What, you're worried that Social Security will be eliminated by Congress? Think about the 50 million now getting Social Security benefits and 78 million more (the baby boomers) now turning Social Security age! That a powerful voting block that Congress knows will vote them out of office if they tamper with Social Security too much. Social Security is not going anywhere - it will be available for the remainder of your life.

Okay, so you postpone Social Security: what about your qualified money like IRA, 401(k), etc.? You know that 100% of your withdrawals will be subjected to ordinary income taxes...and they'll also help determine the income taxes you'll pay on Social Security benefits. No tax breaks here. Which way to you think income taxes are headed? Me too - higher and higher because of a sea of red ink from national debt, rising deficits and excessive federal expenditures which will continue unabated. So, by taking this money first you (a) will pay lower taxes now rather than higher taxes later and (b) you'll be taking less of this money later when Social Security benefits starts, meaning you'll pay fewer taxes on these benefits. Of course, if you think taxes are going to go down (are you crazy?), you might conclude this sequence of use is backwards. What about the your non-qualified savings and investments? You should use these to bridge the income gap as needed and for emergencies. Again, if you have more money than you'll need in retirement, get professional help so that taxes can be minimized when this money passes to your heirs at your death.

In the past year there has emerged a lot of chatter about delaying Social Security...and the conventional wisdom of taking it first (which almost three-fourth of Americans do) is dead wrong. You don't agree? Well, remember that at one time the conventional wisdom said the earth was flat, but we know different now. At one time the conventional wisdom was take Social Security at age 62 but we now know that is wrong for most folks. Money Makes the World Go 'Round

I got to thinking about money after a meeting the other day. It is probably the #1 worry people have. I would say health comes first, but it only seems to outrank money if something is wrong, rarely does it come first from a position of a holistic or preventative mindset. Money has also been the main motivator in too many stories to count - movies, books, theater, art, and in real life. From the humorous to the dramatic, people will do just about anything for it and they let their lives revolve around it.

So if it is THAT important, why do people, especially women, spend so little time really understanding it? While there are exceptions, I would venture a guess that most people don't know where their money goes or have a solid foundational financial education. Money can be sexy and powerful, so why is it that really understanding how it works and our attitudes towards it don't make our priority list?

In my personal experience and in my work with clients, money ranks right up there with "no time" as the #1 reason we use for why we can't be, do, or have what we really want. So, what stops us from getting the education, awareness, and support we need to make money work for us and be an enabler for what we want versus an anchor holding us back and keeping us tethered in place (or sinking) as the case may be?

In a word, fear. Fear gets in our way of doing something about it. And, the beliefs and attitudes we've been taught and formed as we marched through the years of childhood up to and including this morning keep us rooted in it. Some of the fears my clients have shared include:

Not having enough money

Having a lot money and being successful

Intimidated by finances and afraid to learn

Afraid to ask spouse/significant other because he controls the checkbook

So deeply in debt or out of control and afraid to know the full extent of the situation

Money is more than just money. It has power beyond dollars and cents. The topic of money carries with it powerful emotions. After all, people are driven to do insane things for money such as staying in dead end jobs for decades, murdering, and stealing for it. It is so powerful in fact that it is sometimes hard to keep things in perspective and obey the golden rule - people first, then money.

Where Do You Stand?

Our views and behaviors around money are as varied as we are. I've personally known people at all ends of the scale from bankrupt musicians to millionaires who tape the soles of their shoes together so they don't have to spend money to buy new shoes. There's nothing wrong with being frugal and there's nothing wrong with spending money for enjoyment. The key is to understand your beliefs about money and the ins and outs of what you earn and what you spend.

Take some time to answer the following questions (Yes or No) so you can get a handle on where you are right now.

I know exactly what I earn.

I know where every last dollar I spend goes and why.

I know my financial goals and have a plan to reach them.

I have an independent financial professional who works solely for my best interests to help me understand and navigate the financial maze.

I spend less than I earn and save at least 10-15% of my income.

I do not carry credit card debit. I pay cash for everything or pay my balance in full each month.

Now, explore your beliefs by journaling about the following questions:

What were my family's attitudes towards money when I was growing up?

What do I think of people who have a lot of money? What do I think of people who have little money?

What You Can Do To Build a Solid Foundation

Dealing with money is a lifelong affair. There is no quick fix solution or one size fits all. Even winning the lottery isn't a solution because most lottery winners end up right back where they were (or worse) because their beliefs and behaviors did not change. However, the good news is that you are in charge of and can take control of your financial future. You simply need to take an active role in the process.

Invest in your financial education.

You can never go wrong investing time and money in your own education. With the amount of resources available on the Internet and in print there are no excuses for going through life with blinders on. Several weeks or months later, perhaps, there is a knock at your door and the FBI wants to know why you are receiving stolen funds. You explain that the funds are not stolen, they are payments for equipment purchased by people from Techhydraulik, and you are their legitimate agent.

You may not be held criminally liable since you were an unknowing dupe, but you may certainly be liable for repayment of all of the money that passed through your hands.

And of course, the real perpetrators have long ago closed that overseas account and disappeared.

It's been a big year for my husband and me. We had our first child and recently closed on our first home, since our town home was feeling a bit snug with our new addition. Cruises are an excellent value. Food, entertainment and many onboard activities are included in the price of the trip. Still, it is easy to overspend if you're not careful.

Where can the spending add up? Watch the beverages, shore excursions, spa treatments and items ship sell onboard. Many are over priced.

Talk to your travel agent about the port you are visiting and read online blogs. In many islands you can just walk off the ship for shopping and beaches, where on others you will want to buy an excursion or take a cab.

Spa: Want a relaxing massage or facial? Regular prices are about 20 to 30% higher than you would pay at a local spa. The best time for a Spa treatment is the days you are in port, where they will run $20 to $60 off per treatment. Keep in mind even if you have an excursion planned for the day, the spa is open until 10 p.m. Try to avoid getting your hair & nails done onboard. They are expensive and usually do not offer any specials on these services. Also, they will try to sell you products at the end of your treatment. Ask questions and write the name of the items down but purchase it when you get home. You can usually find cheaper price on the internet. Elemis for example often offers 10% off on online purchases.

Consider purchasing packages, such as the soda, wine, beer, coffee or ice cream programs. I was recently on a 7 day cruise where it cost $29 per person. When you consider that each soda costs $3, and my husband usually drinks a minimum of 5 per day, he easily would have spent $80 or $90 on soda versus the $29. Tea, coffee, milk & juice is free onboard, but name brand coffee such as Seattle Best or specialty coffee drinks, there is an additional charge. Ice cream can be ordered each night in the dining room with your choice of topping and whip cream, so perhaps pass on the $3.50 ice cream sundae and wait for dessert. You can always order 2 desserts if something else on the menu interest you. Chocolate cake with a side of vanilla ice cream perhaps?

Internet: Wifi connections are great on the newer ships, but again this can get expensive. Purchase a package prior to using the internet. Minutes can go for over .70 if you do not purchase a package, but drop down to .30 to .50 on average depending on usage if you buy one of their packages. Some ships run specials the first day of the cruise where you get 10 to 30 minutes free if you sign up for a package that day so check your cruise bulletin.

Specialty dining: In recent years ships have now offer restaurants that have a cover charge. The food & service in these venues are usually top notch, but if you are on a budget, you can skip it without being cheated. It's not that $20 or $25 is not worth it for Brazilian Lobster or Kobe beef, but depending on the ship you are on, there is usually a great selection in the regular dining room without paying additional. The menu's are posted early each day outside of the dining room, so take a look and see what interests you. If you don't feel like dressing up, then the buffet usually has the same items being offered in the formal dining room.

Gratuities: Your bar bill include 15% tip each time you order. There is no need to tip additional money, unless you feel the service is "above and beyond."

Watch the casino! Cruise lines are making it easier for you to spend your money. On many ships, In the slot machines, you just insert your room key and you can deduct the amount you'd like right from your account. It is harder to keep track of how much you are spending versus using cash, since no receipt prints out. Best bet is to have a budget in mind for each night, take cash and walk out when it's gone.

Last but not least, shopping. Although items onboard are duty free, chances are you can purchase the items cheaper in port. You can "negotiate" with local vendors most of the time to get the price down, where on the ship it is a fixed price. Also be aware of the shopping allowance per person. When visiting the Caribbean, you are eligible for a $800 pp exemption. You may also bring back 1 liter of alcohol, up to 200 cigarettes and up to 100 non-Cuban cigars. You will be asked to complete a form prior to disembarking the ship that explains all of these exemptions. Keep all of your receipts handy just in case you are questioned by customs.

Children can spend hours in the kids club, and adults can spend an entire cruise vacation, reading, watching movies, swimming, watching live entertainment and eating, at no additional cost.

Coming Into Sudden Money - How Fun Would That Be?

Wouldn't it be great to start off a new season with a boat load of cash? I mean the amount of cash you could use to pay all debts, put your kids through any college (and grad school), buy the home of your dreams and a vacation home, and still have enough money left over to give generously and then live off the interest.

Probably the best get-rich-quick scheme that has made people into instant millionaires is the lottery, in most U.S. states. Have you wondered what you would do with all that money if you won the lottery? Well, most likely you would pay off all your debts, put some away for the kids to go to college, buy a larger house, buy a second house, buy a few really nice cars, and then live peacefully off the interest. Yes, that would be great, especially the peaceful part. That's how those lottery winners live their lives, right?

Not according to Susan Bradley, who wrote Sudden Money: Managing a Windfall. Bradley found that lottery winners and others who come into new cash will either keep the money and lose family and friends, lose the money and keep family and friends, or lose both. Very few lottery winners keep the money and keep family and friends.

As I researched lottery winners and their lives post-winning, I found this is true many times. Regardless of whether people kept the money or lost most of it, I was interested in why many do not keep family and friends. For most, it was because people wanted the lottery winner to invest in their business ideas, and the new millionaires refused (and the family or friend dropped them), or the new millionaires invested, and it was a bust (and the millionaire dropped the family or friend). For some, it was because people wanted the winner to support them or give them free stuff.

Janite Lee won $18 million in 1993 in Missouri. She generously gave money to charities, schools, politicians, and education. Eight years after winning, she filed for bankruptcy. She had $700 left.

Billie Bob Harrell won $31 million in 1997 in Texas. He was to receive $1.24 million annually for 25 years. It was great at first. He bought a ranch. He bought homes and cars for himself and family members. He gave generously to his church and to people in need. A lot of people came to him requesting money. But the giving, lending, and spending got out of control. His wife left him a year later, and in 1999 he killed himself.

Sometimes just being a relative of a lottery winner is bad news. In 2004 in Illinois, a teenage girl whose grandfather won the lottery a couple years earlier overdosed on drugs, which she was able to buy because her grandfather supplied the money. Other teens who knew she had a lot of money pressured her to buy the drugs and use them.

Just like when psychologists say that love and hate run closely together, so do sudden wealth and sudden loss. People who come into money quickly, such as lottery winners and people who receive large inheritances, usually make decisions too soon. They put their house on the market and buy a new one right away. They buy several cars, quit their jobs, and invest in ideas that sound great.

So what can a person do to protect themselves when they suddenly find themselves with a lot of money?

The first is to proclaim a moratorium on decision-making. They should put the money into safe investments for the time being and then take some time (say, 3 to 6 months) before taking any action on money decisions. The 3- to 6-month timeframe is a planning stage.

The next thing they need to do is to get organized and focused. They need to list the major life decisions they'll need to make in the next 5 years. Then they should list their assets and debts, and review their current insurance coverage.

During the 3- to 6-month planning stage, they should write out how they're going to live during this stage. What will their expenses be? Where will they get their income during this time (and how much)? How long will this planning stage last?

Beyond the planning stage, they need to review their income for the following 12 months and beyond. They should plan out their taxes and what is leftover. They need to plan out what they want their life to look like in the next 5 years. (For example, where will you live? What will you do every day? What will you be involved in? How extravagant will your life become?) They need to ask themselves what future expenses are coming, such as college education, retirement, and really great trips. Plus, they need to plan for how much philanthropy they want to be involved in, for at least the next 5 years.

During the planning stage, a new millionaire will also want to find a financial advisor, accountant, and estate attorney (and perhaps a wealth psychologist). They can ask for referrals and then interview each professional to get a good idea of compatibility.

I know people who play the lottery regularly. I told them if they win to come talk to me and I'll give them some decision-making advice (without asking for handouts).

In addition, I've read that people who come into sudden money notice their phone ringing a lot more often, as people they don't even know find out about their new money, find their phone number, and start calling asking for investment money and handouts. (This is in addition to the family members and friends who start calling a lot more often.) This would be a good time to either drop the home phone number completely (even if that number has been the home number for years) or get a new home number. Likewise, getting new cell phone numbers would probably be a good idea. (Then only tell select people the new numbers.)

What about those friends and family you might lose if you come into sudden money? You know what? You can't control other peoples' responses when you choose not to invest in their business ideas or give them loans or handouts. You have to make the best decisions you can with your new money and let the other chips fall where they may.

I've realized that when I've gone through difficult times, I've found out who my real friends are. The same principle applies to sudden money. If you get it, you will know who your real friends are within one year.

If you ever find yourself the recipient of an influx of cash, keep your head on straight. Don't go to extremes. Give yourself quarterly reality checks. Expect that you are going to lose some friends and family members. And get advice from several qualified professional people regularly.

North Carolina Unclaimed Money Reaches $700 Million

As more NC unclaimed money continues to be turned over to the state, than
returned to it's rightful owners, the state's missing money treasure chest has
swelled to a record $700 million! These unclaimed funds already belong to
regular people whose only obstacle is learning to properly search for and locate
all possible claims.

According to the North Carolina Department of the Treasurer, there are over
100 types of property that may become unclaimed after being dormant for 1-5
years (depending on the type of property). Of those 100 types, NC lists
"bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks,
bonds, and contents of safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned" as
some of the most common.

As with unclaimed property across the country, the biggest obstacle in
discovering North Carolina unclaimed money, is often the peoples' searching
capabilities. For starters, very few people are even aware of these abandoned
funds (or they'd obviously have never forgotten them), and those that are
aware, simply haven't been taught the proper way to search.

With nearly 1.5 million properties being held by the state, the chances of being
owed money are better than ever. Every Tar Heel out there should rush out
there and begin their search. But those who aren't educated on finding
unclaimed assets could be in for a lot of frustration and wasted time, unless they
learn how NOT to search.

Most people seeking to reclaim their lost money think that if they can find a
website to input their name and click a "search" button, they've done all they
need to do. This couldn't be further from the truth. For starters, not all
databases are legitimate, and those that are can only be considered as good as
who updates them.

Suppose a person searches their name on Friday, but a state employee hasn't
actually added a record in that person's name until Saturday. The search would
obviously be unsuccessful, even though the person was owed money.
Unclaimed money lists aren't updated in real time, so searching frequently is one
of the best methods to implement if you would like to be confident in the results
of your search.

Out of date records aren't always the fault of the state. If the asset simply
hasn't been dormant long enough to be considered unclaimed, then it won't
have been turned over to the state. Strict laws dictate how found money is
handled in each state, so you won't issues like a bank turning over a bank
account after 6 months, simply because you hadn't accessed it. So again, a
lack of a record doesn't mean you aren't due a claim, and you should check
again regularly.

As was mentioned, there are differing "dormancy periods" for each type of
property, which commonly range from 1-5 years. This means that after periods
of inactivity exceed those dormancy periods, the companies who hold these
properties are required to turn them over to the state if they are unable to find
the rightful owner on their own. At this point, the state will act as a custodian,
essentially a "holder" until you claim your money.

There are countless problems, in addition to the examples of search issues
mentioned above that often befall new searchers, which makes it all the more
important that the people of North Carolina allow an unclaimed money expert
to provide them with a step-by-step guide for navigating the lost assets maze.

The very first skill you must acquire is to value the money you earn. The money in your hand is likened to a seed. That seed could germinate and grow several money trees that will yield durable fruits in the future.

Do you know that the single dollar in your hand is a potential one million dollars? You call that an exaggeration? Okay listen to this. Recently an analysis was done in the United States to know the actual value of a dollar several years ago as compared with its current value at the New York exchange. That one dollar was estimated to be more than $1 million. The money was put in instruments that overgrew inflation over the years.

You can now see why you must not undermine the value of that naira in your hand?

To practically achieve this goal, you must as a matter of urgency get acquainted with how you spend every dollar you earn.

Strive to know more about your personal account. Categorize your expenditure outlets and spend your income in that order. Have a record of your personal finance in a durable book.

I learnt this lesson very early enough when I started my working career. I quickly bought a hard cover ledger book where I record my money spending habits to keep track of how my income is being spent over the years. The mere knowledge of how I spend my salary in the last 5 years has opened my eyes to several other things like the determination to take my financial future out of the hands of Government. I feel a kind of confidence and measure of power of that knowledge which has helped me to acquire financial discipline. I now know the true meaning of asset and liability.

Anything you spend your money on without the prospect of making more money is a liability. Period!

Money Habit 2: Save It

This one is not new to most civil servants. They know how to do this very well. Nevertheless, I must point your attention to how to do it for maximum benefit. Your savings should be a tangible percentage of your salary. Financial experts suggest you save up to 10% of your income and if you can do better than that, good for you.

One thing you must however work against is to allow your savings to be eaten up by inflation.

Your goal should not be only to save but to ensure that your savings is not left at the mercy of inflation. Keeping devalued money is not worth the effort.

You should adopt the principle of saving sufficient amount capable of sustaining you and your family for 3 months even if you are not paid your salary. The left over should be channeled to the next money management habit...

Money Habit 3: Invest It

This is what most income earners never know how to do well. Some out -rightly avoid it for fear of losing their hard earned money and yet what they did not know is lacking is the right information on how to be smart investors.

I have taken it upon myself to speak to some senior civil servants on this matter; what I discovered left much to be desired. Some who invested put their monies on enterprise that will keep them enslaved after retirement. When are you going to enjoy your life if you still continue the same way you worked for Government after retirement? Your strength diminishes with old age so you must learn to invest your money in money instruments that has the potential to multiply the money while you rest.

Robbert Kiyosaki an American financial expert spoke extensively on the 7 levels of investors that I will share with you briefly to further sensitize and empower you to put your financial destiny in your hands.

Level 0

These people have no money to invest. They either spend everything they make or spend more than they make. There are many 'rich' people who would fall into this category. Unfortunately this zero level is where about 50% of the adult population would be categorized.

Level 1: Borrowers

These people solve financial problems by borrowing money. Often they even invest with borrowed money. Their idea of financial planning is robbing Peter to pay Paul. They live their financial lives with their head in the sand like an ostrich hoping and praying that everything will work out. While they may have a few assets, the reality is that their level of debt is simply too high. For the most part, they are not conscious about money and their spending habits.

Level 2: Savers

These people put aside a 'small amount of money usually in a regular basis'. The money is in a lower risk, low return vehicle such as a money market checking account, savings account or certificate of deposit.

They often save to consume rather than to invest ( e.g. they save for a new T.V., car, vacation etc). they believe in paying in cash, they like the security of money in the bank.

Level 3: Investors

There are 3 different types of investors in this group. This level of investor is aware of the need to invest. Generally they are intelligent people who have a solid education. They make up what we call the middle class. However when it comes to investing, they are often not educated....

Level 4: Long Term Investors

These investors are clearly aware of the need to invest. They are actively involved in their own investment decisions. They invest in their education before actually buying any investment.

If you are not yet a long-term investor, get yourself there as fast as you can. This means that you sit down and map out a plan. Get control of your spending habits. Minimize your debts liabilities. Live within your means and then increase your means.

Level 5: Sophisticated Investors

These investors can 'afford' to seek more aggressive or risky investment strategies because they have good money habits, a solid foundation of money and also investment savvy. They are focused, not usually diversified. They often buy investment wholesale rather than retail. They are well educated in the world of investing and actively seek new information.

Level 6: Capitalists

Few people in the world reach this level of investment excellence. In America, less than one person in a hundred is a true capitalist. A capitalist's purpose is to make money by synergistically orchestrating other people's money, other people's talents and other people's time. It is the capitalist that provide the money that create the jobs, the business, and the goods that make a country prosper. These are the Kennedys, Rockyfellers, Fords, J. Paul Gattys etc.

Money Habit 4: Make It

Making money is entirely different from investing it. This is the entrepreneurial side of money. If you are not an entrepreneur yet, learn to become one. Everyone will need to create multiple streams of income in the future. The truth is no matter what profession you belong, the present world economy does not favour a monolithic career in a single life time. The crave for downsizing and re-engineering or reform globally by government and private establishments necessitate that you retrain yourself and acquire more money making, marketable skills.

Opportunities abound in computer communication technology for whosoever cares to improve his family financial fortune. You must learn the skills of being your own boss, even if you are working for a solid corporation and plan on retiring there. The world is just too insecure to make long term plan with one company.

You can make money from what you are good at. Get on purpose. Do what you love and the money will follow.

Money Habit 5: Shield It

Making money is one set of skills. Keeping it is another. As you work toward your financial goals, you will need to learn how to preserve the wealth you are creating.

You must learn how to get your homes, cars and business entities out of sight through corporations, trusts and family partnerships to build a financial fortress around your assets. Do not create problems for your wife and children after your death. Make sure they do not fall prey to greedy relations who went to reap where they did not sow.

Money Habit 6: Share It

This is the last money management skill I will share with you. Remember the story of Harvard University which was rated the best in the world. Most of its facilities are not from the American Government but from wealthy Americans. You multiply what you have now through giving. The more you give, the more you too continue to receive. It is better to give than to receive.

Be a consistent giver. Pay your tithe regularly and consistently. Identify the needy around you and show them mercy. Remember that the ultimate purpose of having money is to help others.

Have you ever gotten ticked off about your financial status? I mean irritated, frustrated and just down right stuck on it? Darn it, you want to be able to get whatever you want, when you want it. You were not born to be patient, stress about money nor go without.

Are you still experiencing the desire to have a bit more cash around for comfort? Okay, I know. Some of you are bold enough to admit you want an avalanche of money. It doesn't matter why you want the money. Some of you want it so you can give it away to a cause that has meaning to you. Some of you want simply to be able to pay your bills on time. And many of you want true wealth to have any creature comfort you desire. Any reason is worthy enough to attract money.

The big question is: are you really tired of wanting more? I have watched many clients, as well as myself, whine and fret about money and not do anything about it. What the heck is that about? Complain about your discomfort about money but keep thinking and doing the same things? You know what that's called, right? Insanity. Yep, it'll make you crazy to have the same results and not do anything different.

Or commit to one action a day that could potentially bring you new money. You can commit to paying $10 or more each month to a credit card payment (or $1000 if you have it).

I totally believe that most people do understand the power of commitment. Deciding with conviction that something will happen and then trusting that decision will always yield you favorable results. It's the stressing over it that will cause delay in this process. We make poor decisions when under stress because we are reacting rather than planning. Making choices when you have high negative emotions running through your body can create less than satisfactory results.

Again, use your irritation to propel you forward. Turn that negativity into something positive. Step out of stress and defeat and into more powerful emotions and do something new.

If the only thing that matters in life is being well and being happy, realize that money cannot create either of those states for you.

The Purpose of Money

Unfortunately, much of humanity is so focused on making money that it has lost sight of deeper purposes. Persons in or affiliated with traditional organizations are perhaps particularly adept at this focus on money, or, as we like to say, "the bottom line."

We are moving into a time (or are we in it?) when we can more easily see the manifestations of our false beliefs. We are facing experiences that more easily teach us to tap into higher purposes and more empowering intention. We will surely get this teaching. Since I have entitled this article, "Money, Prosperity, Abundance," I want to define my terms. For me, each word connotes a different meaning and resonates to a different vibration.

The Meaning of Money, Prosperity, and Abundance

Money is a means of exchange, energy in the form of coins or wampum or reduced to paper as currency. Gold and silver have value -- both intrinsic and extrinsic -- but paper only represents value. The only power money has is the power we give it. Prosperity means flourishing and thriving. We tend to equate prosperity with good fortune and success and affluence, the good things of life. Abundance is an overflowing supply, fullness. The Infinite Source is our supply.

Energetically, money has the lowest vibration of these three. When fears surround money, the vibration moves to a still lower frequency. We can touch and see money. We have many myths and cliches about money (root of all evil, growing on trees, rainy day, buying happiness, and more).

The energy of prosperity has more of a flow to it than money -- listen to the word "prosperity" as you say it out loud and resonate to its vibration. You can feel similar resonance of the words that I used above to define prosperity, also.

Abundance resonates with words and ideas like joy and love and wisdom. Abundance is not really of this physical world, although we use it to manifest in the physical world. We cannot see abundance, we can only see manifestations of abundance. So, too, we cannot see love or joy or wisdom, but we can have feelings, pictures, and examples of the manifestations. All energy comes from Spirit. And Spirit is abundant, infinite, unlimited.

Creating Money, Prosperity and Abundance

When we focus our attention in the world of money, we tend to believe that the only way to generate more money is with money or something else that is tangible or physical. In other words, there is a belief that we can only create something "new" from something that is already created. This is a false belief. This is a belief that is coming to the surface for humanity right now as our money and organizational systems are challenged.

When we live in the consciousness of abundance, we know that we can create more of everything from the Source. There is no fear in this consciousness. Consider how you feel when you are surrounded by the richness of nature, one of the physical world's manifestations of abundance. Ideas flow. Peace is present. You can more easily touch your own joy. You vibrate to abundance.

Releasing Fears and Resistance

Fears and resistance about money are strong in our society, especially now. Such thoughts and feelings are not necessarily in direct proportion to the quantity of money an individual or organization has. Those with considerable financial means often live with more fears and resistance about money than those with modest resources. The usual response to this phenomenon is, "Of course, they have more to lose." But I say it goes deeper than that.

Fears and resistance about money are embedded deeply in the human consciousness because of the attention and feelings associated with it. Since I can see thought forms, I see how and where such dynamics are embedded. These dynamics permeate all aspects of our lives as a society, and impact us even when we do not personally embrace the specific concept. These embedded dynamics disappear as we lift our vibration and consciousness to appreciate abundance.

Fears and resistance about money can be released by surrendering -- often a tough concept for those who have been "successful" in our society. We release fears and resistance by knowing that we opening to wellness and abundance rather than overcoming sickness and poverty. We release by being attentive to our own growth process. We release by letting go. We release by no longer resisting.

Moving Forward

I know -- both personally and energetically -- many successful persons who are being challenged to move into and stay in their spiritual knowingness. Those who have been successful and prosperous in the world as it has been must now shift their foundation so that they believe in the Source of their manifested physical things rather than the belief in the manifested physical things themselves.

In your own family or organization or other group, you might consider ways to discuss concepts of abundance and prosperity and togetherness and plenty and love. Here is a simple example: the word "downsizing" is an anti-abundance concept. It is also dehumanizing, by the way. Consider, also, that "doing more with less" is a mixed vibration -- do you want "more" or "less"? Consider how you can promote more healthy concepts and clear messages.

The dichotomy of wealth and poverty is not merely an issue of distribution, but one of consciousness. We are moving into a new paradigm, a paradigm that includes the awareness and acknowledgement of Spirit. Let's make the move consciously, joyfully, and abundantly. More than enough exists in this world that is constantly expanding.

Money management is much easier to control and understand if you create a well thought out and realistic budget. How do you know what a realistic budget looks like? First of all, you need to recognize that while it is important to cut your spending of frivolous items and daily trips to the vending machines you should still create a section in your budget for fun. This will prevent you from feeling deprived while managing your money, but once that money is gone for the month your spending will have to cease as well.

When creating a budget to manage your money you should begin by writing down all of your fixed monthly expenses. This would include your rent or mortgage, insurance, phone and Internet bills, electric and anything else you receive a monthly bill for, along with their amounts.

Take a close look at each of these items on your list. While some may be unavoidable, there may be others that you are either paying too much for each month or can eliminate altogether. A classic example of this is your phone bill. Many people pay way too much for a cell phone and a land line. If you have reliable cell phone service in your own home and a good cell phone plan, cancel your home phone subscription. If you have extra money left over in one of the envelopes when the end of the month rolls around then you can treat yourself to an extra movie or fun activity, or maybe even save it.

By realizing that smaller amounts are easy to get while larger amounts are very hard to get, you may want to focus your business activities on smaller amounts of money but by using some form of leverage, getting many many people to give you those small amounts.

A Million Dollars is very useful. Anybody would agree with that. A million dollars simply put in the bank at 7% interest would give you around $1400 a week in income. Can you see the usefulness of that amount of money? Conversely a thousand dollars at 7% would give you $14 per week, you couldn't buy a decent meal with that.

If your wish is to earn money easy, you would need to focus on smaller amounts. To find 1000 people to give you $1000 dollars each to make $1 million dollars would be a lot tougher than finding 100,000 people to give you $10 dollars each. *which still ads up to a million dollars) The key to making easy money is leverage. There are different types of leverage. Many many types.

The following ideas give you 5 types of leverage that can help you find more people for less work.

1) A sign is a form of leverage. The printed word is much more effective than verbal repetition. Turning back to our begging on the streets example, making a sign that passers-by can read gives you the opportunity to "talk" to 3 to 5 passers-by at the same time because your sign is being read by many pairs of eyes, where as when you talked, you could only speak to one pair of ears at a time.

2) A podium. To keep it simple I will use the begging on the streets example, of course, apply it to your own business interests. Make money easy by talking to many at once. Standing on a soap box introduces leverage because now you are engaging many pairs of ears and eyes at once.

3) Systems. A system is a form of leverage because it streamlines actions into a successful outcome without having to re-invent those actions every time. By identifying correct steps that lead to a desirable outcome and maintaining those steps as a system, you create many successful outcomes without much effort.

4) People leverage. If you can beg on the street at the rate of $10 dollars per hour, you can train 20 people to help you beg, each giving you $5 per hour in exchange for your training. You now leverage your efforts by 20 people.

5) The leverage of a broadcast medium. If you managed to talk to 10 people an hour to get their attention, tell them your story and get a little money from them, you could do much better using a medium with an existing audience. For example, radio, television or the Internet are all examples of a medium that allow leverage.

There is such a thing as easy money and it is definitely small amounts of money. Nobody thinks twice about a few bucks and using leverage to access many such people at once is the key to success.

I have always wanted to be rich. I want to live a life filled with luxuries. I want to be the envy of others. In my opinion, wealth is something that could buy a lot of things. Money can bring you happiness. However, I do not deny that there are many things that money cannot buy. In fact, I believe that there are other more important things in life than money.

I am born into a middle class family. My family is neither poor nor rich. We are able to afford basic necessities and some luxuries. Also, I am blessed with parents who care a lot for me. They work hard to provide for me and my brother. My brother and I are able to lead a carefree life. I am thankful for all that I have. However, I do not deny that I want more. I want to be truly rich. I want to be able to afford everything that I want.

Being rich can make my life more comfortable. I will be able to buy a big house with servants. I will be able to afford luxurious cars with chauffeurs. I will be able to dine in expensive restaurants. I will be able to afford a private jet in which I can visit all the beautiful countries. Pretty girls will flock to me. I will be able to enjoy relaxing spas. People will look up to me. I believe that money will make me a happier person. I may sound superficial. But these are things that truly only the rich can afford and I to be the rich. If you were given a billion dollars right now, I am sure that you will be a happier person.

I believe that money can buy many luxuries. However, I feel that health is still the most important. I would rather be healthy than wealthy. If you are rich but do not have the health to enjoy spending your money, then money is truly useless. This is common sense. Thus, in order to be happy, a person has to be healthy and wealthy.

Although it is important to be rich, I feel that we should not work too hard to be rich. A person can be wealthy if he works long hours every singe day. However, he will not have the time to enjoy spending his money. Furthermore, he will be less happy working so hard. Hence, I feel that we should try to find ways that allow us to be rich without working too hard. People might feel that there is no way a person could get rich without working hard. However, I feel that by utilizing our powerful minds, we will be able to get rich without working too hard. There are many real life examples. I hope to be able to achieve this.

Thus, I do not deny that I am greedy. I want to be rich and healthy without working too hard.

It seems many people are looking to get some amount of money instantly it seems with no real work or action involved other that to possess it. Maine, the Pine Tree State, has more to offer than the terrifyingly frigged winters in the northeastern most part of the United States is famous for. Abandoned property is considered "unclaimed" after it sits dormant for a specific period of time. Each state has its own dormancy periods for each type of asset. In Maine, dormancy periods range from 1 year to 15 years, depending on the account type, but most ME dormancy periods are 3 years. State law requires that assets be turned over to the state for safe keeping after the appropriate dormancy period is reached. At this point, the state treasurer is in charge of adding the record to their system, making it available for the rightful owner to find and claim it.

Though hard to believe, across the country there really are tens of billions in unclaimed funds, waiting to be tracked down by the rightful owners. Missing money is often dismissed as a scam or myth because people simply can't accept that people could really just forget about or abandon that much money. All people need to do is contact their state treasurer to confirm that these monies are real.

One reason that unclaimed assets totals continue to grow in all states is because the states are notoriously inefficient when it comes to returning these properties to the citizens. Many states have stepped up efforts to put money back in the pockets of the people it belongs to, yet the amount turned over to the state each year continues to vastly outpace the amount given back to the people.

Mantras are a powerful way to generate the focus and energy necessary to create something in your life. Today I would like to share with you a mantra that I have used to generate money for myself.

Mantras should be short and sweet - one word or a simple phrase. This is a generic mantra to increase the flow of money into your life. You may repeat this in your mind when you are doing mundane tasks such as driving or cleaning, or speak it aloud for even stronger effect.

Remember that self-created mantras are more powerful, so feel free to deviate or alter this in any way that pleases you. What I use is this:

Money flows easily and effortlessly to me.

When I speak this, it seems to flow from the end right back into the beginning. A self-perpetuating mantra is ideal, because you can think or speak it for awhile, and then set it on auto-pilot. Focus conscious energy on it for awhile, and then set it as a background. This engages both your conscious and unconscious mind, and has powerful effects.

As I speak that, if I feel the urge to change it, I do. If I am alone in the car, I may feel the need to get louder, or softer, or accent certain words. I may begin to speak a circular stream that all rotates around the central mantra. For example:

Money flows easily and effortlessly to me. Large sums of money flow to me with ease. Now, money is flowing to me, even as I speak. Money flows to me easily. More money flows in than ever flows out. I have more than I need, and I give when I want to. I have freedom of time and energy to do the things I want because money flows to me easily and effortlessly. Now, money is flowing to me even as I speak.

And then round back into the first. This is all improvised, as I feel it flowing through me. If you feel an urge to improvise, do!

It is a good idea to mix static mantras with dynamic ones. The static mantras lock the logical mind (left-brain) into place and focus your mind and energy on your goal, generating a large amount of energy around it. This sets your goal into your subconscious mind, which is the same as planting seeds in a garden. The more you ingrain your mantra, the greater its effect will be. A dynamic mantra, as in my second example, engages your creative mind (right-brain) and may stir your emotion as you really get into it. The emotion in effect lends exponentially greater power to your mantra, and causes your goal or creation to manifest more quickly.

As always, you must be patient as you first begin these types of magick. As with spells and rituals, assume patience and assuredness that your efforts will yield your desired results. The beauty of a mantra, more so than a spell or ritual, is that you can do them anytime, anywhere, as often as you think to. Spells and rituals require a little more investment of time and energy, but mantras can be used for magick during parts of your daily life when you don't have time for visualization or rituals. You can do mantras at home, in the bath, in the yard, in the car, while eating dinner, at work, in meetings, while waiting in line... Just about anywhere that you have the freedom of thought.

I was young and wanted some way to make extra money - something other than another fast food job. A friend of the family owned a small insurance agency. The owner decided to get into the business of process serving, and I applied for the job. Tracking people down and handing them their court subpoenas sounded like fun.

It was more interesting than most of the jobs I have had. I had to find two defendants in a lawsuit stemming from a school football injury (they worked for the school). Both had moved to the area, leaving no forwarding address. After using my best phone pretexts to get information from the family, and doing a little investigating locally, I found them both working in the same place.

I walked up to each, asked their name and handed them the papers. They were served. The problem was that the company was billing by the hour, and I had found these two quickly, meaning little profit. They dropped the idea for the new service, and dropped my job along with it. So much for getting ahead by doing a good job.

I had a wide variety of unusual jobs and other ways to make extra money when I was younger. Sitting here reminiscing at the keyboard might be considered an unusual way to make money too, but hey, it works. Here are some of the other ways.

Make Extra Money By...

Stealing cars: At twenty-one I was willing to try almost anything to make extra money. My brother's towing business got a contract to repossess cars, and I became a "repo man." Prowling the night with my brother, looking for and legally "stealing" cars - this was fun. Don't expect to make too much money doing this though, unless you live in the right area. Oh, and it did involve getting chased, having a gun pulled on us, and other little adventures.

Making walking sticks: I sold hundreds of my own handmade walking stick alongside our other items at flea markets. I added handgrips made from recycled leather jackets, so they cost about 50 cents to make. I sold them for anywhere between $6 to $26. You may also want to make a hobby into a way to make money, but there isn't too much money involved most of the time.

Financing other peoples plans. I put up the cash to buy cars for a couple friends. They knew cars, I had cash. A friend needed $3200 to buy and fix a corvette, for example, and two weeks later sold it for $4200, netting us $500 profit each. Letting your money do the work to make extra money - this is one of the best ways.

Rent rooms. At one point I had almost $10,000 per year coming in from renting the rooms in my home. I owed nothing on the home at this point, so this was a nice income. I had decent renters, and I had built a efficiency apartment on the back of the place for privacy for my wife and I. Easy ways like this are my favorite ways to make extra money.

Kentucky Unclaimed Money Climbs To 150 Million Dollars

According to the KY State Treasurer, the state is now holding more than $150 million in unclaimed property that belongs to the citizens. The only things standing between 200,000 people and their slice of the pie are awareness of these forgotten assets, and the ability to locate and reclaim their Kentucky unclaimed money.

The Kentucky State Treasury boasts about how much money it has returned in the past 13 years, "In 1994, the General Assembly transferred responsibility for the unclaimed property fund to the Kentucky State Treasury. Since then, about $28 million has been returned to rightful owners." $28 million sounds like a lot, but when you spread that out over 13 years, they're only returning a little more than $2 million per year, on average. Much more than that is turned over to the state each year, so the $150 million the state currently holds will certainly grow. Even if Kentucky was to stop taking any more abandoned money today it would still take them 75 years to return the $150 million currently being held, based on their current rate of $2 million per year.

It's not surprising that most people simply dismiss the idea of unclaimed funds as some sort of scam, because it's difficult to believe that there are billions of dollars across the country that people simply forgot about over the years. Who ever just "forgets" that they have money somewhere? Well, apparently a lot of people. Not surprisingly, the states (including Kentucky) lack the resources to track down every single person who is owed missing money. Government doesn't do much efficiently, why would returning money to the people be any different? Citizens of the Bluegrass State need to take matters in to their own hands if they ever want to discover the joys of found money.

Though there are dozens of different potential sources of lost money in Kentucky, the State Treasury's website provides the following list of the most common types: "dormant savings and checking accounts, unclaimed wages, dividends, credit balances and any type of outstanding checks."

A common misconception is that you should only search for unclaimed money in your home state. This couldn't be more wrong, not only because many people have lived in numerous states throughout their life, but also because you don't have to have lived in or even been to a state that might owe you money. Many people work for companies that have their headquarters in another state. In addition to searching the records of more than one state, people need search more than once, because unclaimed money lists are sporadically updated. South Carolina Unclaimed Money Grows To 200 Million Dollars

As of October 2007, it was determined by the Office of the State Treasurer of SC that the state is currently holding $200 million that belongs to citizens who need only step forward and claim it, if they can find it. Despite increased efforts to reunite South Carolina unclaimed money with its rightful owners, which lead to a record return of $900,000 in Sept. 2007, the pile of cash continues to grow.

Each year, South Carolina, like most states, continues to take in more money than it's able to return to the people. The primary problem is the fact that most people are completely unaware that these funds even exist, which is obvious, or they'd never have forgotten about them long enough for them to be considered "unclaimed". Even those who have learned about the billions of dollars in unclaimed property all across the country usually don't know how to go about finding them.

South Carolina is what is known as a "custodial state", which means that they never actually own your assets, they just hold them for you, and there is no time limit under which you must claim your cash. While there are dozens of different types of unclaimed property, the state treasurer lists the following as the most common types under the Palmetto Payback Program: "dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks (including paychecks), unclaimed insurance proceeds, forgotten utility deposits, uncashed dividend checks and unexchanged shares of stock."

With any bonsai plant, watering is crucial. Most bonsai like to have plenty of water, but proper water drainage is key. This is maintained by two very important factors: soil and the pot.

These holes need to be covered with mesh, to allow the water to flow freely but retain the soil.
